Techniques and Articulations

In this series of videos, you'll learn all the typical techniques, articulations, and rhythm patterns for playing reggae riffs. The course will guide you through six riffs featuring skank, palm muting, staccato, and melodic lines. By the end, you'll combine all those riffs into a complete song that you'll get to play. Reggae is known for its distinctive laid-back feel, swung rhythms, and percussive tone. Dial in a good, clean guitar sound and get ready to play.

Melodic Line

Melodic Line

Building Rhythmic Flow

Riff one is a melodic line similar to what you'll hear in songs like "Is This Love" or "No Woman, No Cry" by Bob Marley. Melodic guitar lines are very common in reggae, often including slight palm muting to create a rhythmic percussive tone. This technique helps build up the melody by releasing the palm muting as you approach higher notes, generating a smooth flow.

Staccato and Swing

The riff starts with the fourth fret on the A string, incorporating palm muting and sliding from nowhere. You can still do a slide, even with palm muting. Adding two more notes, still with palm muting, you open up the right hand to play the notes normally. The second of four notes is a staccato note, requiring you to remove your left hand after playing it and rest your pick on the string to stop it from vibrating. This creates a unique rhythm effect.

The Full Course

Chapter 1: Melodic Line

In Chapter 1, you begin with the melodic line, a staple in reggae music. You'll learn how to incorporate palm muting and staccato notes to create a rhythmic flow reminiscent of Bob Marley's classics. This chapter sets the foundation for understanding reggae's laid-back feel and swung rhythms.

Chapter 2: The Skank

Master the skank technique, the hallmark of reggae rhythm guitar. This chapter focuses on playing short percussive chords on the offbeat, as heard in classics like "Red Red Wine" by UB40. You'll learn to release pressure from your fretting hand to achieve the signature choppy sound.

Chapter 3: Doubling The Bass Line

This chapter introduces a key technique in reggae rhythm guitar, doubling the bass line. Inspired by "54-46 Was My Number" by Toots and the Maytals, you'll learn to mimic the bass groove with short, snappy notes, enhancing the rhythmic feel.

Chapter 4: Double Skank

Add an upstroke to the skank technique to create the double skank, a dynamic variation heard in songs like "Legalize It" by Peter Tosh. This chapter challenges you to incorporate rests between strikes for a shuffle reggae groove.

Chapter 5: Single & Double Skank

Combine the single and double skank techniques for a classic reggae riff. You'll alternate between the two, creating a rhythm pattern found in "The Harder They Come" by Jimmy Cliff. This chapter emphasizes maintaining rests between chord strikes.

Chapter 6: High Octave Melody

Elevate your reggae melody by playing it an octave higher, as seen in "I Shot the Sheriff" by Bob Marley. This chapter explores developing a melodic theme by taking it an octave up, enhancing intensity throughout the song.

Chapter 7: Play A Full Song

Finally, combine all the riffs and techniques you've learned to play a full reggae song. This chapter brings together everything from melodic lines to skank riffs, culminating in a complete musical experience.

By the end of the course, you'll have a new connection to your instrument — one that feels personal and expressive. From your first riff to full-stage confidence, this course takes you there step by step.
