Embracing Folk Guitar

In this introductory video, the focus is on using common open chords to infuse your strumming with a folk sound and character. You'll explore style-appropriate extensions to chord shapes, incorporate a baseline into chord progressions, and use counter melody to add depth to your arrangements. These concepts will be presented through five different chord progressions, culminating in a complete folk track that you'll play by the end of the series. Grab your acoustic or electric guitar with a clean tone, use a soft pick for smooth strumming, and let's get started.

Classic Chord Progression

Classic Chord Progression

Timeless Chords

This progression is reminiscent of songs like "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" by Bob Dylan and "Wild World" by Yusuf / Cat Stevens. Folk guitar is all about smooth strumming, so maintaining a good rhythm flow is essential. The chords include G major, D major, C major, and A-7. Notice the thumb muting the two low strings on D major. The transition from C major to A-7 is simple, just remove the third finger from C. Practice these chord changes with a slow click, focusing on moving your fingers early to maintain rhythm flow.

Strumming Essentials

Classic Chord Progression

Dive into the full strumming pattern, starting with G major. The pattern is down, down, up, up, down, up, and applies to all chords. Keep your right hand moving smoothly, even with longer notes in between. Use a soft pick and avoid digging into the strings too much. This progression repeats four times initially, then twice in the song cycle. Focus on the economy of motion, moving fingers efficiently to maintain rhythm.
