Discovering Americana

Americana is a broad style that blends many American music genres like country, folk, blues, bluegrass, and rock. It's rooted in American cultural history, sounding both traditional and contemporary. Think of classic bands like the Eagles and artists like Jackson Browne and James Taylor, as well as modern Americana artists like Chris Stapleton and Jason Isbell. In this series, we'll focus on playing everything on the acoustic guitar with a pick, exploring different riffs that feature various techniques and melodic approaches.

Embellishing Chords

We'll learn how to embellish chords with little melodies, playing low to high strength strumming. This approach gives your playing a unique Americana feel, setting the stage for the full track you'll be able to play by the end of this series.

Slash Chords

Building Movement with Slash Chords

For riff number one, we explore a common chord progression reminiscent of bands like the Lumineers and the Eagles. Starting with C over G, notice how the third finger mutes the A string, creating a clean sound. Transitioning to G is seamless, as the third finger and pinky remain in place, making the chord change smooth.

Rhythm Patterns and Variations

We introduce two rhythm patterns: a simple down-up and a busier down-up-up pattern. This steady bass movement is a staple in rock music, used by artists like AC/DC and Keith Richards. Experiment with moving this progression to different keys, maintaining the bass while changing chords. Good luck practicing this one!

The Full Course

Chapter 1: Slash Chords

In Chapter 1, you'll dive into the world of slash chords, a fundamental element in Americana music. These chords add movement and depth to your progressions, setting the perfect mood for your songs. You'll learn how to use them effectively, drawing inspiration from artists like Jackson Browne and the Eagles.

Chapter 2: Common Notes

Building on the foundation of slash chords, Chapter 2 introduces the technique of keeping common notes ringing between chord changes. This approach adds richness and depth to your progressions, making your chords sound fuller and more connected. Inspired by Chris Stapleton's "Broken Halos," you'll explore how to maintain these common notes to enhance your playing.

Chapter 3: Hammer-Ons

Chapter 3 focuses on embellishing your chords with hammer-ons, a classic Americana technique. You'll see how this technique adds a lyrical, expressive quality to your progressions, as demonstrated in songs by James Taylor and Townes Van Zandt. This chapter will help you develop a more dynamic and engaging playing style.

Chapter 4: High & Low Strums

In Chapter 4, you'll learn to add high and low strums to your playing, bringing rhythm and dynamics to your music. This technique, used in John Denver's "Country Roads," helps your chords breathe and adds a more engaging groove. You'll discover how to split your strumming into distinct parts, creating a dynamic interplay between low and high strings.

Chapter 5: Palm-Muting

Chapter 5 introduces palm-muting, a technique that adds urgency and color to your chord progressions. Often used by modern Americana bands like Mumford and Sons, palm-muting creates dramatic dynamic shifts, enhancing the emotional impact of your music. You'll learn how to control the intensity of your playing, building tension and excitement.

Chapter 6: Chords & Melody

Combining melodies with chord progressions is the focus of Chapter 6. This technique creates memorable, singable parts, as seen in Jason Isbell's "If We Were Vampires." You'll learn to integrate melody and harmony, making your guitar lines stand out and adding a new dimension to your playing.

Chapter 7: Descending Bass Lines

In the final chapter, you'll explore descending bass lines, a technique that introduces movement and tension to your progressions. Inspired by Jim Croce's "Time in a Bottle," you'll learn how to add interest and complexity to your music, creating a captivating listening experience.

By the end of this course, you'll have a comprehensive understanding of Americana guitar techniques, ready to play a full song that showcases everything you've learned. This journey will not only enhance your technical skills but also deepen your connection to the rich musical heritage of Americana.
